FAQ
How often should I clean my gutters?
There are several factors that determine how often you should clean your gutters, but as a general rule and good practice, you should have them cleaned at least once annually. Once per year would be the minimum requirement from you insurance company in the event of a claim you could be rejected if its found you did not maintain your property.
Other important factors to consider include:
- Moss growth on your roof, close proximity to trees, wildlife/birds, all of which will increase the frequency of cleans
- Loose moss and leaves naturally fall into your gutters with wind, rain and even in warmer weather when moss and leaves dry up and fall off.
- If you have birds around then you’re almost guaranteed to require regular gutter cleaning. Your roof is its own ecosystem and is a breeding and feeding ground for organic growth , insect etc. If you feed birds this can really impact on your gutters. pigeons are a particular nuisance as when they have a place to feed and often choose to live there, they hang around and feed all day and then drop it out all over your roof and gutters. If you have pigeons your gutters will definitely be full almost al the time.
How do I know my gutters need cleaned?
If you have asked the question, how do I know my gutters need cleaned? and can’t remember the last time they were cleaned out then it’s likely they’re overdue.
There are many other clues to look out for such as:
- Moss on the ground/drive/patio thrown out by birds
- Visible growth – sometimes its easy to see grass or plants growing in sections of gutter and this is a clear sign they require attention
- Water staining on walls – This is never a good sign and points to seriously blocked gutters or blocked downpipes. Leaving these too long before unblocking could result in most costly repairs
- Water over flowing from gutters – If water is overflowing from your gutters, this can also be serious and cause bigger problems. Water overflowing generally means that gutters are completely full and/or downpipes are blocked.
